As we step into 2025, new safety regulations are coming in a local Maryland County that will impact septic tank installations for all of Maryland. At Legacy Septic, safety has always been a priority. We’ve been ahead of the curve by installing safety nets (since during 2023) in all of our repairs, riser installations, and new septic installations. With the new regulations effective January 1, 2025, we’re even more committed to keeping your property, loved ones, and the community safe.

Why the New Regulation?

Effective January 1, 2025, in a local Maryland County requires all septic tanks installed or upgraded to include a manhole safety screen. These are also called safety nets and the industry is known to albeit graphically, call them “kid catchers.”  The regulation aims to protect both people and animals from the risks associated with damaged, unsecured, or unattended manhole lids. Septic system manhole lids can sometimes become damaged, improperly secured, or left open, leading to serious accidents and even fatalities. Adding a safety screen, is a critical step toward preventing these kinds of tragedies.

What’s Changing?

The new requirement calls for all septic installations to either have a new safety screen installed or be retrofitted with one if the septic system was previously installed. There are several approved safety screens, including universal models like the PolyLok safety screen and the Infiltrator EZsnap safety screen.   Legacy chooses PolyLok.

In fact, at Legacy Septic, we’ve already been proactively installing safety screens into all of our systems for over a year, ensuring our clients’ septic systems meet the highest safety standards. Whether it’s a simple repair or a complete new installation, we make safety a non-negotiable part of the process.

What Does This Mean for Homeowners?

For homeowners in this county, it means that all new septic systems installed or upgraded after January 1, 2025, will be required to have this added layer of protection. Whether you’re installing a brand new system or upgrading your existing septic tank, it’s crucial to ensure that the safety screen is included.

This isn’t just a requirement—it’s an important safety feature that can prevent avoidable accidents. A simple safety screen can save lives by protecting individuals and animals from harm, especially if a lid becomes compromised.
